Yes, I'm still alive

I've been some combination of really busy and really lazy lately. I don't have much time now, but so that I have an agenda to follow up on later, here's what's been happening:
- Company holiday party. We got all dressed up. Pictures to come.
- Xterra club. New plans and trips for the new year.
- My old computer game addiction and the best $9.99 I ever spent. It's called Pharaoh.
- New TV. 24, Heroes, Earl, Office, Scrubs. I'm not getting enough sleep anymore. :)

More later!

Snowmen

My day off was pretty uneventful. I slept in (I'm always paying back sleep debt!) and lounged around the house all day. We picked up a pizza for dinner tonight, and I was amazed by the number of snowmen around our neighborhood. Most of them were probably as tall as me and some were really cool! There were also quite a few snow walls, caves, and igloos built in people's yards. It would be fun to be a kid again and never get cold playing outside in the snow. :) I also miss other kid activities like playing in creeks, catching fireflies, riding bikes all day...

Fun with Snow!

Last night, they were talking on the news about the possibility of snow today. When I got up and drove in to work around 5:45, there was a light dusting on the ground and roads. Not slick at all. The snow kept coming, and it came down thicker. After watching squirrels playing in it all morning out my office window, at 10:00 they announced that they were shutting down our customer support phones (which hardly EVER happens), and a little before 11:00, we got word that the whole office was officially closed. When I got to my car in the parking lot, it had at least 3, maybe 4, inches of snow piled on it. The AWD system did its job, though, and I made it home pretty easily at 15 MPH.

Marc and I went out to the store later in the afternoon, and it had gotten worse. Enough of the snow had melted and glazed over to make things pretty slippery. There were lots of cars on the sides of the road, over curbs, and in small ditches along our local neighbood roads. I'll be surprised if things are clear enough tomorrow for my office to open, which is kind of a bummer since Wednesdays are my days off anyway. It sure is pretty though!

We tried taking Max out in the snow, but he wasn't having any of it. Miji, on the other hand, takes every opportunity to try to escape out the door and run around outside. Crazy cat!

24 Starts Tomorrow!

It's been a very un-blog-worthy week. About the only excitement has been trying to find something to wear to our company party on the 20th. Since I wear jeans and t-shirts to work just about every day, it's fun having something to dress up for. I ordered three dresses online, not knowing how I'd like any of them. The one that I liked best is bit small, so now I have to pick between the other two. Red and glittery or purple and sleek? Decisions, decisions.

The other exciting thing is that 24 finally starts again tomorrow night! And on top of that, we get 2 hours of it tomorrow and another 2 hours on Monday night. Sweet!

Stupid TV Quote of the Day

There was a school shooting up in Tacoma this morning. Watching the news just now, they were interviewing students and neighbors of the school. While the reporter was talking with a neighbor whose dog barked (and I guess helped locate the shooter? I didn't catch it...), we heard this gem:
"Don't ever tell your dogs not to stop barking."

Okay, wait a minute. I think the point she was trying to make was that when your dog barks, there might be a good reason, so don't hamper that. But what she said doesn't make sense. "Don't tell your dogs to stop barking" is what I think she meant. I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the double negative she spoke though. So let's say I have dogs, and I tell them, "Don't stop barking"--her quote is telling me not to say that. Wow. I'm confused.

This reminds me of an interesting book on logic that I read awhile back. If you're interested in such things, check it out.

Fainting Fright

I had a scary morning. Last night I took some decongestant and sleep aid pain pills, which may or may not have contributed to my morning. When I woke up, I felt normal until I got in the shower and started rinsing the shampoo out of my hair. My vision started blacking out. I sat down and felt better. I stood back up and almost immediately I completely lost my vision. Blackout. I quickly rinsed the rest of my hair and got out of the shower. I laid on the closet floor for an unknown number of minutes, then quickly got dressed. I felt horrible whenever I was standing up, but I made it in to work anyway. Things got progressively better as the day wore on, especially after I got over my nausea enough to get some food in my stomach. I talked to a nurse and got an appointment for Friday to do some blood work, but the nurse seemed pretty confident that as long as I'm feeling better, I'll be okay. I guess it's not all that uncommon for fainting spells to happen to people during morning showers, especially when the water's too hot. It was freaky.

My hopes for the new year

These things apply to myself and everyone in general. I'm writing them to help solidify what I want to focus on in my personal relationships and general life activities this year. I don't intend for these to have a preaching tone, so if they do, I apologize in advance.

1. Recognize your personal responsibility. This applies to people who sue restaurants because they're fat from eating the food and to everyone's everyday life. Let's all stop pawning everything off as someone else's fault, someone else's problem, or something beyond our own control. Which leads into...

2. Accept that some things just are the way that they are. No one can ever have absolute control over what happens to themselves, but we ALL have the power to address what does happen with the right attitude.

3. Take meaningful action on the things you care about in life. Don't sit idle when something or someone you care about needs attention. But on the other end of the spectrum, don't always take action just for the sake of doing something. Make sure that your actions are purposeful and that they address a root problem instead merely creating more problems.

4. Practice tolerance for others' ways of life. From the places we live to the food we eat to the religions we do or don't practice (just to name a few), everyone is different. Tolerance to me is more than just accepting that other people do things differently--it's exploring it, understanding it, and appreciating it.

5. Manage your time to your priorities. There are lots of hours in the day. There's time to do just about anything you want to do. The trick is your prioritization. Recognize when you choose (personal responsibility) not to do something and know that it was your choice. If your choices aren't in line with your priorities, then you know where to start fixing things. "I don't have time" is rarely an acceptable excuse. You just didn't prioritize your time.

6. Same as #5, but replace time with money.

7. Live the Golden Rule. I think about this often with the things that I do and say, but I know there are times I could be better at it. Consider how the things you say and do might affect others, and adjust your behavior accordingly.

8. Stop being a hypocrite. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Follow through on your promises, whether to yourself or other people. It might be hard to recognize hypocracy in yourself sometimes, so pay attention when other people call you on it. If your words and actions aren't aligned, it could be because you don't truly know or love yourself... leading into...

9. Love yourself. This one can be hard because first you have to learn who you are. This should be an independent task that doesn't require a spouse, friend, or family member. I have achieved so much happiness just by realizing what I really cared about and who I am as a standalone person. Don't let yourself be defined by any other person.

10. Sieze the day. We never know when our time here will be up. Within reason, don't put off doing the things that are important to you.

I'm sure I could come up with more, but my cold medicine is kicking in and I need to get to bed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I wish you all the happiest year yet!

Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2007 everyone! I hope that 2006 closed out as a great year and that 2007 will be even better for you.

Our weekend up at Snoqualmie was cool. We only skiied/boarded for a few hours on Saturday, but it was a good warm-up for the season. Hanging out with our friends Mike and Diane is always cool, and they treated us to lots of great food. We watched a couple of DVDs: Little Miss Sunshine, which I thought was very unique and pretty funny, and My Super Exgirlfriend, which was very predictable but amusing.

Yesterday as we were getting ready to head home, I had a really stuffy nose. By the time we got home, it was pretty much a full-fledged head cold. Boo. I don't feel as horrible as when I was sick last week, but it sure sucks not being able to sleep because I can't breathe and having to get up and blow my nose every hour or two. We were big party poopers last night and went to bed around 10. I suspect today will be a lazy day around the house, except that we might pop out and see Night at the Museum. We saw The Good Shepard last week--it was good, but it was LONG. They did a good job threading that plot together.
